What is SIBO?
SIBO is an abbreviation for Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth. This basically means there is an excessive amount of bacteria growth in the small intestine.
Rather than letting the villi and microvilli in our digestive system absorb nutrients from food sources, the excess build up of bacteria starts to digest it, which can cause it to ferment. The bacteria’s digestion creates a by-product of hydrogen gas and/or methane, which is only created by the bacteria, and not naturally by our body.
The build-up of body gases can lead to constipation, burping, diarrhoea, cramping, wind and bloat. Plus, there is the risk of the gas causing leaky gut syndrome, which is a condition where the gut cell wall becomes permeable and particles of food may enter the bloodstream, which results in an immune response.
