Essential oil of Clove

Cloves in the wild

Clove (Eugenia caryophyllata) is a type of evergreen tree that is rich in flower buds that contain a variety of health-supporting properties. Clove or clove bud has a Latin name of clavus, which means nail; this relates to the shaft and head of the clove bud. Originally, clover was used in ancient Chinese and Indian civilizations, but later spread across the world to arrive in European countries by the 7th and 8th centuries.

A popular method of using clove oil is oral care products, and commonly found in dental products like toothpaste and mouthwash.

But, its natural properties give wide-ranging health benefits that go beyond oral health; this includes support for blood health, a positive response to stress and a healthy digestive system.

A great bonus of clove oil is the rich vitamin and mineral content, such as vitamins A, C & K, potassium, phosphorus, iron and calcium. Also healthful antioxidants are present and include a reliable source of omega-3 fatty acids.

Eugenol is the major bioactive compound in clove. Also, the use of clove is appreciated for its ability to support microbial balance for healthy cellular health, gum health and balance blood sugar.

In addition, clove oil can act much like a natural bug repellent.

Furthermore, one or two drops of clove oil placed in the mouth helps to keep it fresh and clean.

Let’s look at the major qualities of clove bud oil, including its benefits and uses:

  • Natural bug repellent
  • Helps with oral hygiene and promotes fresh breath
  • Mix 2 ounces of water with 1 drop of clove essential oil to create a soothing mouthwash
  • Combine a veggie cap with 2 or 3 drops of clove essential oil to support the cardiovascular system
  • Create an invigorating scent in the fall or winter by diffusing 1 drop of orange essential oil, 2 drops of cinnamon oil and 3 drops of clove oil
  • Rich in healthful antioxidant properties
  • When brushing the teeth, add 1 drop of clove oil to the bristles before applying the toothpaste
  • After visiting your oral hygienists, apply 1 drop of clove oil to the gums and teeth
  • Blend a carrier oil with clove essential oil (use directions for amounts) to experience a warm massage

Clove bud oil blends well with a long list of essential oils, including: basil, cinnamon, geranium, grapefruit, lavender, lemon, nutmeg, orange, peppermint, rose, and rosemary. Its wide-ranging use makes it a popular choice in herbal combinations and aromatherapy oil.

The one coffee we love the most

We’ve tried so many coffees over the years – from all around the world and from so many types of farms, it’s almost enough to make our sleep-deprived heads spin.

Coffee beans
Coffee beans

However, one of our favourites is roasted close by, in Powell River, BC, by 32 Lakes. This coffee is robust but not bitter, aromatic but not overly laden with non-coffee overtones. Plus, the people behind 32 Lakes are especially wonderful – what’s not to like?

Check out the coffee in-store, or online. And, if you want to learn more, check out what Nicole has to say about it here:
